Implementation of the I-PASS Handoff Methodology in the Women’s Care Unit at Baptist Health Paducah
At Baptist Health Paducah, leadership recognized that handoff communication was a high-priority opportunity to strengthen patient safety after results from a Culture of Safety Survey highlighted vulnerabilities. The Women’s Care Unit—including Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby services—implemented the I-PASS handoff methodology to standardize communication, increase patient engagement, and support a culture of safety. Despite initial resistance and competing operational demands, the initiative quickly led to stronger compliance, clearer and more patient-centered bedside reports, and a noticeable boost in staff confidence and collaboration across units.
